Is Poverty a Crime?

When taking a sobering view at the Criminal Justice System in Canada, there is one question that I often ask myself; is Poverty a Crime? It seems to me that it is. All of the UCR Data (Unified Crime Reporting) in this country indicates that being poor is a crime. A better question to ask our elected officials is; if being poor isn't a crime, then why are all of the people in jail poor? That question has more validity and I will tell you why.

People in this country, like our elected officials, seem to have this perception that street level crime is the most problematic within our society. They are dead wrong. Let me make a statement "Do Not Trust Guys with Ties!" there is a simple reason for that and that is, someone can do more damage to society and the environment with the push of a button then any street level "thug" could do. The best example that I can use is one from the 1980's. In the 1980's the Ford Motor company produced the Ford Pinto, the problem with the Ford Pinto is that it had exploding gas tanks because some genius put the gas tank at the rear of the car therefore, upon impact it would explode. When Lee Iacocca and his brilliant accountants met to discuss the impact that this car was having and how many people were dying as a result, they crunched (ed: sorry) the numbers and came to one conclusion........ it would cost more money to recall all of the vehicles and fix them then to pay out money in law suites...essentially letting people die. Let's put this into perspective, if the writer of this article were to take a knife or a gun and kill people at random, which is what he did, I would be deemed as a serial killer and be thrown in jail for the rest of my life, so why was he not punished?  Furthermore, have you ever been driving down the freeway and seen a sign indicating to you that if you litter you could be subject to a $2000 fine? Well a sudden feeling to vomit comes to my stomach because it seems to me that the companies that continue to dump oil into the ocean literally killing thousands of wildlife seem to go unpunished........why? Is that not littering of epic proportions?

My final sickening example is this, and this seems to be the most common one unbeknownst to many. Let's just say that there is a small town with a large population of people over the age of 70, the most common problem for people that age is mobility. In the middle of that town a grocery store sets up shop and because they know that the elderly folks can only shop there because they cannot get around to shop anywhere else, they double or triple the price of milk from 3 dollars to 6 dollars and then to 9 dollars for four litres because no matter what the people will pay it, because they cannot get it anywhere else.....it is simply called price fixing. Lets just say that the writer of this article were to walk up to one of those elderly persons, grab their wallet and take money out of it, would I not be charged with theft or even robbery? You bet your life on it and to ad salt to the wound that crime would look repugnant and repulsive because of whom I was victimizing, yet people who keep the economy going are allowed to? Why? It is obvious that there is a two tiered system, one for rich people and one for everybody else.

My final rant is geared towards the RACISM in this country. People think......Canada isn't racist, well guess again. Aboriginal people in this country make up roughly 2% of Canada's population, yet 30% of all the people in the Provincial prisons systems are native, why such a discrepancy? The simple answer to that question is.....RACISM! The problem that this writer has is simply this...if we look to our elected officials for leadership and guidance and they are the highest form of leadership in this country and they are racist, then how on earth is it ever going to change? The RCMP in the Prairies see it fit to arrest drunken Aboriginals and drive them out to the coldest part of the Province and kick them out of the car, let them freeze to death and leave them for dead. Isn't that murder? Is that not premeditated? If the writer of this article were to pick up a drunken man and drive him out to the middle of nowhere, let him freeze to death and leave him for dead, I would be charged with and convicted of Criminal Negligence Causing Death?

The answer to that is simply yes.
